In many ways a Hot Stone Massage is very similar to most standard massages, with one major exception and that is, in addition to using my hands, forearms and feet, here at the Thai Massage Room & Spa, I will also use the smooth heated stones to perform many of the massage techniques.
Many therapists prefer to use the warmed stones and lay them on key points on the body. While this is pleasant and relaxing, I believe that by using the stones as part of the massage treatment, it gives the client the feeling of being massaged by someone with intensely warm hands.
The main benefit about using the warmed stones is that they allow the heat to penetrate much deeper into the muscle. This not only feels amazing, but also gives you the added benefit of a far deeper sense of relaxation and tension relief, both physically and emotionally.
It's important to note however that while hot stone massage can be very appealing to a variety of people, this technique is not for everyone. There are a few conditions such as neuropathy; multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease that may inhibit your senses so may not be advisable. That said I have clients with neuropathy and multiple sclerosis who gain a great deal of benefit from the treatment. Although I will always be careful with the temperature of the stones, your ability to give proper feedback is crucial.
While it still may be cool outside, a Hot Stone Massage is one of the best ways to warm up and feel great at the same time.
